Leadership 101: More Than a Title

--

Over half of leaders fail within the first 18 months. A sobering statistic, for sure, but it’s something that needs addressed. If this is the case, what can — and should — be learned from other people’s missteps?

Let’s dive in and take a look at what makes a leader great, and why integrity matters just as much as any class or degree.

Honest and Open

Effective leadership is synonymous with effective communication. If you can’t create and keep an open line of communication, then getting past that first year and half isn’t very likely. When you’re responsible for a team, you’re responsible for making sure they feel heard and, more importantly, actually listened to.

Encouragement

Creating an atmosphere of encouragement and inspiration is huge. Leaders will far too often fall into a style of micromanagement instead of creating an atmosphere that fosters excellence and creativity. One of the tricks of a great leader is their ability to known what to do, what to drop, what to delay, and what to delegate. Pay special attention to the last in the list — delegate. Knowing how to step back and let your team work is huge for their overall growth, success, and feeling of satisfaction.

Teach Don’t Bark

When (and I stress when) one of your employees make a mistake, use it as a teaching moment and not as an opportunity to say ‘i told you so’. Remember, mistakes and missteps are bound to happen, but don’t let that bring a mistake and a misstep out of you.

Be Direct

Don’t beat around the bush. The people you lead want to know how they’re doing. This is especially important when they do something well. When you stay aware of your employee’s accomplishments and praise them for it, you’ll be amazed at the team morale and success.

Being a leader isn’t about being better, it’s about bringing the ‘better’ out of the people around you. If you can do this then the results will be amazing. Remember, you will reap what you sow, but you have to be diligent and stay fluid.
